Jan van Dijk
Jan van Dijk (1918-2016) studied composition with Willem Pijper and was in his turn the teacher of a large number of younger composers in The Netherlands. He started out as an admirer of the music of Darius Milhaud and produced an extensive oeuvre in all genres and in all styles of the 20th Century.
In 1980 the Oktopus Wind Ensemble and its conductor Bastiaan Blomhert commissioned music to the Huldegedicht aan Singer, an absurdistic poem praising the Singer sewing machine by the Belgian author Paul van Ostayen.
In the first version of the music the text was read by the all members of the ensemble and the conductor; the second version employs two narrators, of which one can be the conductor.
