Nicolai Rimsky Korsakof

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakof came from a distinguised family and as many of his relatives entered a militairy career. He served in the Imperial Russian Navy and made quite a few journeys to the East as officer. Still he wished to persue a career in music and joined the group around  Mili Balakiref, together with Alexander Borodin, Modest Mussorgski and Césare Cui.

He became one of the most successful composers of his time and also had a record of being the teacher and mentor of many others Igor Stravinsky among them.
